Friday 22nd May, we are throwing open the doors for a free live rock night with the brilliant Rocketsmith, all in support of Rossendale Radio — the volunteer-led station that's become the genuine voice of the valley.

Who are Rocketsmith?

These lads have been busy. Rocketsmith have:

Supported Bryan Adams on tour
Been featured on the Leeds United home match day playlist

Translation: this is a proper, full live rock set from a band that's clearly going somewhere big —and you can catch them in your local pub for nowt. Honestly, the kind of evening you'll be smug about for years (“yeah, I saw them at The Boot & Shoe before they were huge”).

Why we're putting this on for Rossendale Radio

If you've not tuned in, Rossendale Radio (104.7 FM) is a volunteer-led station that champions local businesses (us included), keeps the valley entertained, and genuinely cares about the people who live here. They've had our back time and time again, so we're chuffed to do something to give back.

This fundraiser is all about helping keep them on air so they can carry on doing what they do for the community. Entry is completely free, but we'll be inviting donations on the night — give what you can, every bit makes a difference.

We've already got a big screen out there ready for the World Cup, and once the revamp is complete, it's going to be the perfect spot to enjoy food, drinks, and live sport in the sunshine. Escape Room Adventures at Lucardo

The night was absolutely fabulous! We headed to Lucardo Rawtenstall Escape Rooms for an evening of puzzles, panic, and plenty of laughs. Big shout out to the team at Lucardo for hosting such a fun night. Getting Lauren screaming from the very start was just hilarious (Sorry, Lauren. Not sorry.)

Christmas Quiz Night 2025!

The lead-up to our Christmas Quiz on Tuesday 23rd December had been building excitement for weeks, following another fantastic regular quiz night where the 99% Club and the Radioheads claimed first and second prizes respectively.

We recently discovered the origin of the team name 'Sheila's Flaps' and to be honest, we could n't be more relieved. A big thank you to Sheila for generously bringing in her delicious homemade flapjacks for all the quizzers to enjoy!

The night itself was nothing short of brilliant. The turnout was excellent, with familiar faces who'd been joining us throughout the year mixing with some new teams. The questions tested everyone's knowledge, the bingo and card games kept the excitement levels high, and the buffet kept everyone fuelled for the mental challenges ahead.

When Christmas Quiz Night finally arrived on 23rd December at 7pm, it proved to be the perfect finale to our year of fortnightly quiz events. We'd pulled out all the stops, significantly increasing the prize money with a whopping £100 voucher for first place and £50 for second place. Entry remained at just £2 per person, making it incredible value for what turned out to be a brilliant evening.

The format included all the usual favourites—Stand Up Bingo and Play Your Cards Right with a jackpot of £250—but we'd added extra special touches befitting the festive season. A raffle provided additional chances to win, and we treated all our quizzers to a complimentary buffet throughout the evening.

Christmas hats added to the festive atmosphere, and the energy in the room was absolutely fantastic.

We were already looking forward to welcoming everyone back in 2026 for more quizzing fun.

A massive thank you to Alan, our quiz host, who has been entertaining us all every fortnight throughout the year. His hosting skills, quick wit, and ability to keep the evening flowing smoothly has been instrumental in making our quiz nights such a success. As the winners celebrated their prizes, there was a real sense of community and appreciation for everyone who had supported our quiz nights in 2025.

Movember Fundraiser Heroes: £1,649 Raised for Pendleside Hospice in memory of Stacey.

Well done lads! It was an honour to help with your fundraising efforts for Pendleside Hospice.

£1000 Movember Target SMASHED

When Thomas, Paul, and Luke started their Movember fundraiser for Pendleside Hospice, they set an ambitious target of £1,000. By the end of November, they hadn't just hit that target – they'd obliterated it, raising an incredible *£1,649* for this vital local charity.

Day One: Clean Shaven and Ready

It all started on 1st November with a simple post: "All clean shaven and ready to go… will they look any different by the end of the month or will we have a bunch of handsome Tom Sellecks amongst us??? Who knows!!" The lads committed to growing moustaches throughout November (Movember), raising money and awareness for Pendleside Hospice along the way. What followed was a month of fundraising, community support, and some truly questionable facial hair.

The £1000 Target Hit

By the end of November, the news everyone had been waiting for came through: "£1000 MOVEMBER TARGET HIT! Well, we didn't expect anything less and we couldn't be more proud of Luke and our customers for arranging the Movember fundraiser for Pendleside Hospice! Well done boys, you absolute diamonds!"

The ladies at Pendleside Hospice recorded a special thank you message to everyone involved and everyone who donated, acknowledging the incredible effort that had gone into the campaign.

The Movember Reveal Party

The final push came with the Movember Reveal Party at Ye Olde Boot & Shoe, complete with raffles, bottle tombola, and "all sorts of shenanigans." Every penny raised went straight to Pendleside Hospice, pushing the final total to £1,649.

A Personal Connection: Remembering Stacey

This fundraiser was about more than just growing moustaches and raising money. For Thomas Rowe, it was deeply personal. His sister, Stacey, had recently passed away at Pendleside Hospice, and the care she and her family received inspired this incredible fundraising effort.

Pendleside Hospice shared Thomas's story in their "Thankful Thursday" feature:

"Thomas Rowe's sister, Stacey, sadly passed away recently at Pendleside Hospice, so Thomas, along with his friends, held a raffle and tombola at The Old Boot & Shoe in Waterfoot, as part of a special fundraiser, in Stacey's memory.

"Thomas, or Tommy, as he known to his friends, along with Paul and Luke, attended the Hospice with a fantastic cheque banner in the sum of £1,649!"

"Stacey was at Pendleside Hospice during her final days with us. The care that she received, as well as her husband, Kevin, and son, Archie, was incredible. Stacey was an infectious, loving and extraordinary person, who was loved by so many and is dearly missed by us all.

A Lancashire Classic, Reimagined

Lancashire hotpot is one of those dishes that defines our region. It's comfort food at its absolute finest - the kind of meal that has warmed Lancashire families for generations. But we wanted to do something a bit special for Lancashire Day, so our chefs have created a show-stopping version that honours tradition while adding some creative flair.

Our Lamb Shoulder and Chestnut Hotpot

Picture this: tender lamb shoulder that's been slow-cooked until it practically melts on your fork, combined with sweet chestnuts that bring a wonderful earthy richness to the dish. It's hearty, it's warming, and it's everything a proper hotpot should be - layers of flavour built up through careful preparation and quality ingredients.

But we didn't stop there. This beauty comes served with mulled red cabbage that's been gently braised with festive spices, bringing a sweet-and-sour element that cuts through the richness perfectly. Food Collection & Selection Box Appeal

Last Christmas, something wonderful happened at the Boot & Shoe. Our generous customers came together to donate £2 each, which allowed us to purchase selection boxes for The Raft Foundation - Rossendale's Foodbank. The response was heartwarming, and we knew we had to do it again.

This year, we're taking it a step further. Not only will we be collecting donations for selection boxes, but we're also setting up a dedicated collection point for food donations to help local families in need.

What We're Collecting

The Raft Foundation has let us know which items are most needed right now:

Tinned meat, vegetables, and soup
Coffee, tea, and long-life milk
Cereals, porridge, and dried fruit
Toiletries: toothpaste, soap, sanitary products, and nappies (size 5-6 plus)
Pet food for dogs and cats

How You Can Help

You'll find our collection box right at the entrance to the bar - you can't miss it! Feel free to drop off any of the items listed above whenever you visit. If you'd prefer to make a cash donation towards selection boxes, just speak to any member of our team and they'll be happy to help.

In the spirit of Race Across the World, Pendleside Hospice has sought out local adventurers to take on a brand new event for 2025- Race Across Pendle, whilst raising vital funds to care for people in Burnley & Pendle.

Zoe's story:

We are taking part in the Race Across Pendle on 11th-12th July and need your help!

Pendleside exists to promote and enhance quality of life for people with life-limiting illnesses, their families and carers; by delivering specialist and holistic palliative care, which addresses their individually assessed physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs.

Pendleside currently costs £6.1 million per year to run and only receives around 20% funding, therefore heavily relies on charitable donations and sponsorship raised by fantastic supporters.

A Day at the Races: Boot & Shoe's Trip to Haydock Park Sprint Cup 2025

"A fantastic time. A brilliant day." — that's the only way to sum up our Haydock Park races.

On Saturday 6th September 2025, a group of us from the Boot & Shoe headed to Haydock Park Racecourse for the Sprint Cup Celebration — one of the biggest flat racing weekends in the North West calendar — and what a day it turned out to be.

Why Haydock Park?

If you've never been to Haydock Park, it's one of those racecourses that feels genuinely special. Set in 127 acres of beautiful parkland, roughly halfway between Manchester and Liverpool, it's a proper racing venue — the kind that makes you feel like you're somewhere important even before the first horse has left the starting gate. The Sprint Cup itself — the Betfair Sprint Cup — is regarded as the six-furlong championship of Europe. So this was serious racing, serious atmosphere, and serious good fun.

The Day Itself

The buzz from the moment we arrived was brilliant. There's something about a racecourse on a big race day that just lifts the spirits — the anticipation, the colour, people dressed up, the sound of the tannoy, horses being walked to the paddock. It's an experience that's hard to replicate anywhere else. We spent the afternoon taking in the races, making some (very sensible and carefully considered) bets, cheering far too loudly at the finishing line, and generally having an absolutely brilliant time.

Racing, Atmosphere, and Great Company

What made the day so special was the combination of great racing and even better company. Heading somewhere like this as a group — people who already know each other from the pub — just works. You've got someone to share the excitement with, someone to commiserate with when your tip finishes last, and plenty of laughs along the way. Haydock is also a brilliant venue practically — plenty of space, great facilities, and the kind of warm northern welcome you'd hope for.

A Day Out Worth Doing

If you've never been to the races before, or you've been meaning to go and just haven't quite got round to it, a day at Haydock Park is absolutely worth putting in the diary. It's accessible, it's exciting, and you genuinely don't need to know anything about horse racing to have a fantastic time. For those who are a little more clued up — the Sprint Cup weekend in September is one of the highlights of the flat racing season. Quality horses, quality racing, brilliant atmosphere.

After a day like that? Absolutely yes.
